Whey Protein Prevents Chronic Disease, Research Says


Studies in the UK have shown that the darling supplement of bodybuilders prevents diabetes and brings cardiovascular benefits




Whey protein, a darling of bodybuilders, can also bring health benefits that go well beyond muscle building. According to two studies conducted by researchers at Newcastle University in the UK, taking the supplement before breakfast helps prevent type 2 diabetes.

The substance, sold in powder, is derived from whey and can also be found in foods such as milk and cheese. In a study of obese men, it has also been shown to be effective in improving blood sugar levels.

In the first study, 12 obese men were divided into 2 groups. The first should rest for 30 minutes and the second, walk on the treadmill for the same period, according to information from the Diabetes Times. Participants then received 20 grams of the supplement or a placebo before consuming a full breakfast of carbohydrates.

The results showed that those who took whey protein before the meal did not show peak blood sugar soon after eating.

In the second study, 11 men with type 2 diabetes received 15 grams of the supplement. The results, presented at the UK Diabetes Professionals Conference, showed that participants' sugar level remained stable. The volunteers also felt satiated, which helped control the desire to snack before lunch.

"We know that a high level of glucose after eating can contribute to poor glycemic control and can also be harmful to cardiovascular health. We have shown that consuming a small amount of whey protein before a meal can help people avoid high blood glucose levels and help them feel more satisfied after meals, "said Daniel West, author of Study, to the Diabetes Times.

Research published in October of last year had already shown beneficial effects of the supplement for cardiovascular health. Scientists at the University of Reading in the UK have concluded that the supplement may help reduce the risk of heart disease by lowering blood pressure, cholesterol and making blood vessels healthier. Those who took the supplement had a 8% lower risk of developing a deadly heart condition.
